Consider this a challenge for partners in committed relationships who appreciate the horror genre: Get comfortable with your significant other and stream Together. The independent film success of 2025 recently had its online premiere on the Hulu service. At first glance, it might appear like conventional physical horror, but beneath Together resides a deep examination about how we choose to love our partners.
A Directorial Debut Exploring Relationship Dynamics
Together is the first full-length movie for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It features actors Alison Brie and Dave Franco as Millie and Tim, an unmarried couple that have been together for over ten years. Having wed in reality in 2017, the two stars contribute a unique chemistry to their characters, skillfully embodying both the strengths and weaknesses of a long-term relationship.
The plot starts when the couple relocate from the urban environment to the countryside for professional reasons. A somewhat stereotypical plot device, of course, but that’s largely where the conventions end. Together evolves into as much a psychological exploration of the pair’s relationship as it is a body horror flick.
A Supernatural Catalyst
While trekking near their new home, a tempest descends, and the two discover an hole in the earth. After spending the night there and managing to escape, a mysterious influence begins influencing the couple. This force creates a paranormal intimacy between them that goes far beyond simple connection.
The complete narrative is a slow burn fright fest, weaving in moments of fever-dream horrors, gross (but never too gross) physical transformations, and genuinely funny dialogue (sometimes in the middle of something disturbing). The director weaves these elements together seamlessly and wraps them up in a consistently growing aura of dread.
Nuanced Portrayals
A great deal of Together is solely Brie and Franco, and they deftly portray numerous complexities to the characters’ relationship. Her self-assurance and emotional bond is waning due to a lack of intimacy. Her underlying frustration of Tim for his reluctance to focus on anything other than his failing musical ambitions slowly bubbles to the surface.
Tim, on the other hand experiences isolation and separated by Millie, who’s the reason they’ve left the city and removed from his support system. He fears the idea of utterly sacrificing his sense of self in another person. This fear is amplified by the circumstance he lacks a driver's license and is dependent on Millie for transportation.
The director's cleverest decision is that he avoids making one partner or the other the clear bad guy.
Both characters face the sort of issues that are inherent in most partnerships over a long period. Deep down, they still love one another. They still laugh together, offer support, and share intimately at times. But beneath it all, there’s an unavoidable feeling of questioning about their relationship.
Symbolism and Metaphor
While the supernatural forces in Together symbolize these fears of unhealthy attachment and totally devoting oneself to a partner, the metaphor avoids being overly obvious or pretentious. Instead, these more disturbing, unsettling scenes present a brilliant analogue to the interpersonal storytelling. Both the horror and the drama work together symbiotically.
A Divisive Ending
Together’s conclusion, which remains unspoiled, has created disagreement on the story's concluding statement about unhealthy partnerships. Accounts suggest that unattached audience members have seen the movie as a powerful case for avoiding commitment. Conversely, some couples having disagreements found that the film ultimately assisted them make up.
If you are alone or with a partner, your own reaction could act as a telling indicator of how you perceive partnership. Will the conclusion sow feelings of uneasiness and dread, or a positive outlook on love? Will you identify in either protagonist and feel frustration, or simply turn to your significant other and say, “We could get through that together”?
Whatever the case may be, Together is an experiment you can embark on today.
Together is streaming on the streaming service Hulu now.
