Royal Air Force Typhoon fighter aircraft have operated alongside France's air force in a joint strike targeting an hidden munitions depot in Syrian territory operated by the Daesh militant organization, as stated by the UK's MoD.

The location, identified by intelligence, was thought to be housing weapons and explosive materials, the statement said, and was located in mountains just to the north of the ancient city of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"The RAF jets used precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to hit a number of access tunnels providing entry to the facility... preliminary assessments are that the target was engaged successfully," the MoD said.

There was no indication of any civilian impact in the operation conducted Saturday night and all the aircraft returned safely, the defence officials confirmed.

The Typhoon FGR4s were backed up by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

The Islamic State group - alternatively referred to as ISIS - established extremist governance over large swathes of Iraq and Syria until 2019.

"This strike demonstrates our UK leadership, and determination to operate in unison with allied nations, to stamp out any re-emergence of the terrorist group and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the Middle East," the British Defence Secretary John Healey said.

British military aircraft have performed surveillance missions over Syrian airspace to "forestall any attempted resurgence" of Islamic State subsequent to its defeat at the climactic battle in Baghuz in the year 2019, the authorities noted.

"I want to thank all the members of British forces participating in this mission for their expertise and their bravery," he added. "They were among a great many British troops deployed over the festive period. This operation, to remove terrorist threats who pose a risk to our safety, shows how British military are always on standby, continuously, protecting the UK within its borders and powerful internationally."

During December, the US military executed what it described as a "major assault" on Daesh sites in the country, following an assault resulted in the deaths of two American soldiers and a local interpreter in Palmyra.

The UN says Daesh still maintains an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 fighters in both countries.
